How to schedule price changes on Shopify

Ways to schedule sale prices on Shopify—from bulk editor and apps to compound sequences—and what to verify before prices go live.

Updated October 3, 2026 · Reliova Commerce

Merchants who search schedule price change Shopify or price scheduler app usually want one job: move variant prices at specific times without staying up until midnight to edit admin.

Shopify does not ship a first-class “price calendar” for every store workflow. In practice you combine native tools, bulk operations, and apps. This guide maps options and what to verify so prices start and stop when you expect.

Option 1: Manual or bulk edits (small catalogs)

For a handful of SKUs:

Pros: Simple, no app dependency.
Cons: No automatic revert unless you schedule a second manual pass; easy to miss compare-at cleanup.

Option 2: Discounts instead of base price changes

Some teams run events purely with discount codes or automatic discounts instead of changing variant prices.

Pros: Familiar merchandising; easy to turn off a code.
Cons: Stacking with existing sale prices; harder to reason about effective margin across a large catalog.

See discount stacking on Shopify before mixing discounts and sale prices.

Option 3: Scheduling apps (A → B → revert)

Many Shopify apps move a price from point A to point B at a time, then back. That matches the mental model of a price scheduler.

What to ask any scheduler:

For PriceWave specifically: sequences focus on Price (list). Compare-at remains a merchant Admin checklist item—see the compare-at note below.

Option 4: Compound sequences (progressive markdowns)

Clearance and week-long events sometimes need stepped prices—for example lower each day—rather than a single drop.

PriceWave’s Price Sequence Engine builds compound steps (campaign pricing / progressive markdown), enforces a floor before every write, and reverts to originals on complete, cancel, or budget end. That is broader than a one-shot A→B scheduler.

Plan notes:

Shield MAP/hero SKUs before you build the wave. If discounts will run alongside the sequence, use Simulator (Supernova) before launch and Discount Safety (Nova+) while active.

Before any scheduled change goes live

  1. List concurrent discounts and codes
  2. Spot-check effective checkout on top SKUs
  3. Define end-of-event revert and who verifies it in Admin
  4. Plan gates: Simulator / Discount Safety when stacks exist; Product Shield for exclusions
  5. If prices stick after the event, use sale price not reverting

Compare-at

PriceWave sequences change and revert variant Price. If you use compare-at for “was/now” messaging, set and clear that in Shopify admin as part of your launch and end checklist.

After the event

Verify admin prices match intent. Prefer tools that surface write failures and let you confirm live Admin—not only internal logs.

PriceWave raises stuck-price and write-failed alerts on every plan when a write doesn’t stick in Shopify. Separately, Nova and above include a realtime Watchdog for external list-price edits on active campaigns—it pauses the wave so you can resume, adopt the new base, or cancel.

Details: sale price not reverting.
