Discount stacking on Shopify: how combinations break margins

Why sale prices plus discount codes plus automatic discounts compound—and how to check effective prices before and during a campaign.

Updated October 3, 2026 · Reliova Commerce

Discount stacking is when more than one promotion applies to the same cart line—often a sale price (or a list-price wave), an automatic discount, and a code your team forgot was still live. Customers pay less than you modeled. Finance finds out days later.

Merchants search for this problem in many ways: discount stacked accidentally, two discounts applied, sale plus discount code, Shopify discount combinations, prevent over-discounting. The intent is the same: know the effective price before orders arrive.

How Shopify combines discounts (high level)

Shopify lets you configure whether discounts combine with each other and with product sale prices. Settings change over time; always confirm in Discounts → [discount] → Combinations for each active promotion.

Common failure mode:

  1. You set a 30% off sale via a lower variant Price (or a PriceWave sequence step)
  2. A 15% sitewide code is still active and set to combine
  3. Automatic free shipping or a Buy X Get Y rule adds further margin pressure

Your spreadsheet modeled 30%. Checkout delivered something closer to 40%+ off on some SKUs.

PriceWave-relevant failure mode: a list-price wave plus a live code or automatic discount. Floors guard the written list price; they do not by themselves cap checkout if stacks still apply.

Why “we’ll watch the first orders” is risky

First orders on a big sale are exactly when:

You want effective price per SKU before launch, especially on hero products and low-margin lines.

Manual checks (no app)

For a short list of SKUs:

  1. Build a test cart as a customer would (incognito, correct market)
  2. Apply the same codes you expect to be live during the event
  3. Compare checkout to your planned floor margin

For large catalogs, manual checks do not scale—simulation or tooling becomes necessary.

Simulate before launch

Pre-Launch / Campaign Simulator (Supernova) runs read-only on draft and scheduled waves: sequence steps plus discount overlays, with per-product effective prices versus your floor. It is for rehearsal before go-live, not for waves that are already active.

That is different from Shopify’s admin preview alone, which may not reflect every concurrent mechanism you use. Still avoid promising perfect checkout parity for every app/Functions discount—complex stacks are why you rehearse.

Discount Safety (Nova and above) is not the pre-launch tool for draft/scheduled campaigns. Point those to the Simulator.

Monitor during the campaign

Pre-launch simulation does not help if someone adds a new code on day two.

Discount Safety (Nova and above) runs live checks on active waves plus active codes/automatics and flags near/below floor. It is strongest on simple percentage or amount-off stacks. BXGY, free shipping, and app/Functions discounts are modeled more completely in the Simulator before launch—Safety is not a full substitute for that rehearsal.

Floors vs checkout price (important)

Floors block sequence steps that would write below your minimum list price. They do not stop a checkout from going lower if discount codes or automatic discounts still stack—use Discount Safety (Nova+) on live waves and the Simulator (Supernova) before launch.

Our Terms of Service describe this distinction for compliance-minded merchants.

After a stacking incident

  1. Disable the overlapping discounts
  2. Fix variant Price in admin (and compare-at if you use sale badges)
  3. Document which SKUs ordered below your intended floor
  4. Add a pre-launch simulation step to your campaign playbook

For the next event, consider budget caps and tagged discount lifecycle sync (Galaxy and above) so sequence end (including budget end) can deactivate tagged Active discounts—not every untagged code in the store.
